Chests puffed out to bursting point. Feet that glide and stamp with resounding force. Fingers that snap or flutter like butterflies. Perfect pirouettes and swaggering struts: is the very being of the Argentinian people to be found in the country’s traditional dances?
Adentro! explores this question by focusing on the origins of their distinctive movements.
In Adentro!—a word meaning “inside” that’s shouted out when starting a dance—Diana Szeinblum digs deep into the bodily expression of gender, deconstructing physical and ideological stereotypes in the process.
A trio of symbiotic dancers produces subliminal images of the windswept pampas, evoking a past that’s still very much alive today. Like a volcano in which lava slowly forms before suddenly erupting, the abstract dance of Adentro! is an alchemical vessel that gradually transforms a national identity, then explodes into a celebration.
