Gershwin, for his part, draws on jazz clubs for his Concerto in F, fusing swing with classical elegance—resonating with panache under the fingers of Marc-André Hamelin. Escaping the city’s tumult on Long Island, Rachmaninoff writes his Symphonic Dances, the last spark of an exiled Romanticism, steeped in nostalgia and grandeur.
